Every year, Americans spend millions of dollars on cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, Champagne, and whatever you can think of to celebrate Valentine's Day. This year, I feel a definite need for celebrating LOVE, especially since we are almost two full years in to our COVID experience. But what does Valentine's Day really mean? And how has our culture portrayed the norms and customs associated with the holiday?
I know that I am very excited to celebrate. To honor the LOVE I share with my husband, the love I receive and give from motherhood, and the love I feel for my closest "besties" and community of extended family and friends. As soon as it's February 1st, I will put away all of my "winter" vibes in my home and decor and will bring out some pink and gold to make my home look gorgeous.
Here are some of the the images from my Valentine's Day Inspiration Board that have inspired me this year. Enjoy the view and after, I will cover the problems I have with this holiday that I love so much.

Ok- so now onto my rant about Valentine's Day. Although I have amazing childhood and teenage memories of the holiday, here's what I don't like about having a day dedicated to LOVE.
The first problem I have is that there is this EXPECTATION that lovers have to do something special or else they haven't honored their love properly. Men feel pressure to perform and give flowers and a gift, etc... and women build it all up in their minds and often times are left wanting more. I don't think that this is healthy for any relationship lol.
The second issue I have with Valentine's Day is that people who don't have a lover or spouse/partner tend to feel left out or alienated on a day and possibly can even lead to depression or loneliness. I know that there have been years where I didn't have a boyfriend and it made it kind of hard for me to see all the marketing around.
I DO appreciate how we have begun to celebrate GALentine's Day as well over the last decade or so. It allows for us to celebrate our community of friends who love and support us and that we give our love and support to as well. So this has given me a renewed sense about the holiday.
One sweet memory that I have carried with me from childhood is how my parents celebrated Valentine's Day. Instead of getting a babysitter and going out on their own, they decided to make it a family celebration of LOVE. We would get out all the fancy dishes and glassware, set the table with candles, and my mom would make the most delicious dinner and dessert. We would talk and laugh by candlelight and enjoy each other. I'm sure my parents would celebrate after my brother and I were in bed... but I never knew about it. Overall, it has been such a blessing to continue this tradition with my own family.
However you feel about Valentine's Day, I wish you an amazing day celebrating LOVE with your special someone or tribe of Gals. Just make sure you wear some Heather Gardner Jewelry while you are doing it- or BUY some ASAP if you don't have any!!
xoxo,
